This book presents a selection of papers delivered at the Scientific Symposium of the 16th ICOMOS General Assembly held in Quebec City (Canada) on October 1-2, 2008. The concept of the spirit of place is used here as a heuristic device, intended to enhance the understanding and practice of cultural heritage in the 21st century. It constitutes a dynamic relationship, as well as a living cultural process. By its very nature, the expression “spirit of place” conveys in and of itself two fundamental elements of this relationship: spirit, which alludes to the mind, to human beings and to the intangible (stories, beliefs, rituals and festivals); and place, which refers to a site, the physical environment and the tangible elements (landscapes, buildings and material objects). The two are in constant interaction, mutually constructing and reconstructing one another, both constituted and constitutive of the spirit of place. In this collection of essays, the authors provide new and exciting responses to the challenges of the politics and practices of cultural heritage today, as they deal with themes such as the changing significance of the spirit of place, the conservation of the social memory of heritage sites, the involvement of communities in preservation and interpretation, the development of sustainable tourism and the use of digital databases and Web technologies. The innovative actions proposed here aim to make world heritage more inclusive, interactive, dynamic and sustainable.
